I promise I am not one of those people who want attention and post things on the internet to get sympathy but I have had friends and family wanting to know what happened so I think this will be the easiest way to get the story out there so you guys know!
Devon had quite an episode this weekend. At work he had a migraine that went downhill and fast. At 4pm he started to not feel so good, then by 8 he was sitting in a chair feeling nauseous and dizzy and started to not be able to feel his hands. Shortly after that, his hands were all cramped up and he couldn't control any part of his body he could just move his eyes and look at everyone around him questioning him. Then he passed out and collapsed. He was rushed to the medical ward in the prison, where they put him on oxygen and then they put him on a stretcher and in the ambulance where he remembers them yelling at each other saying he was having a seizure.
At that time I got a phone call from my father in law saying that something happened to Devon at work and he was being taken to the Florence hospital. Devon said they were trying to save time and just ask him right there what his wife's phone number was and he was so out of it that he kept telling them his own number over and over again. So they were calling his number to try and get a hold of me. SO sad :(.
Then I got another phone call two minutes later as I am scurrying around trying to fly out of my house, that he was now going to be air lifted to St. Joseph's hospital. Then I started to freak out even more.
THEN I got another call after that saying that they changed it to Scottsdale Osborn because that was closer. I was like what in the world could have happened to him!?! I was so emotionally and physically sick I can't even begin to explain.
That was the longest drive to Scottsdale of. my. life.
They took him right off the helicopter to get a cat scan and cut his clothes off. They thought he had a stroke because everything that had happened are all signs of one so since there is 3 hours to reverse a stroke, they wanted to move as quick as possible. I was able to go and see him after they put him in a bed in the E.R. I was totally expecting to turn the corner and see him smiling at me waiting to tell me he was going to be ok.
But, no. He was so out of it writhing in pain. He was not acting himself at all and it scared the crap out of me. He looked up at me and the Dr. asked him if he recognized me and thankfully he said under his breath,"yes". Then he just closed his eyes and put his hand over his forehead and was back to moaning in pain. I felt so bad for him that he was so miserable! I wanted it to be over so bad. His dad and brother came and gave him a blessing and we are so thankful for that.
I sat by his side in the emergency room the whole night while they ran tests, did a spinal tap, gave him morphine, and Dr.'s tried to question him about his whole medical history. I kept whispering in his ear so that he knew I was there but I doubt he remembers. After the 2nd dose of morphine and some zofran (since he got super sick after the 1st dose) he was starting to calm down and was able to fall asleep. I was so relieved when I heard his quiet snores.
It was around 1am by this time and they had admitted him and got him into a room. That is when he started acting himself again and I was so relieved. I was so glad for many things but especially to see that he wasn't in horrible pain anymore.
After the nurses were done hooking him up and asking all kinds of questions, we were able to go to sleep.
The next morning, I woke up to the nurse coming in the room and she woke up Devon and told him it was time to get him MRI. I was so happy to see him acting normal and able to get up on his feet and walk to the bed they had waiting for him outside. The next two days were pretty much full of getting all kinds of tests done. An e.e.g., heart ultrasound, blood sugar tests, and I am sure a whole lot more that I don't remember. He doesn't have diabetes. He didn't have a stroke. He doesn't have hypoglycemia. He was diagnosed with Complex Migraines. I had a hard time believing that was what caused everything but I am so thankful he is better and we are home finally! They prescribed him medication he needs to take immediately when he feels a migraine coming on. And he has a follow up appointment to see the neurologist which I am anxious for him to go to since he has had a non-stop mild headache ever since we left the hospital Monday at 3pm.
I know I kept saying "I" was so scared, happy, relieved, etc.... I know it's not all about me but Devon didn't complain at all and since I am the complainer in the relationship, I can't help but express my feelings about it all.
Here are a few pictures I took with my phone of him being cute in his hospital gown and a drawing to describe Devon's side of the story :)
JD drew this on the white board in Devon's room. I loved looking at that whenever I needed the mood lightened
